about

In 2008, a flute was discovered in the Hohle Fels cave in Germany that was thought to represent the earliest known musical instrument.
The flute is made out of a vulture's wing bone perforated with five finger holes. Carbon dating suggests that the instrument was made approximately 35,000 years ago.

This flutes is therefore 'Prehistoric', meaning that it was made before the advent of writing. Interestingly, the position of the holes on this flute corresponds with the pentatonic scale. This means that the hysterious and powerful sound of the pentatonic scale has been with us since the dawn of civilization.

Origin of the Species is a series of compositions attempting to boil music down to its core. This core that resonates deep within us, and which has been resonating within us since the dawn of Man.

The album features the first recording of the "Theloniousaurus Suite", amongst other compositions by pianist and bandleader Misha Gray.
